The soldiers who carried Sal out dropped him harshly on the ground. Makeo heard the sound of a breath escaping the boy’s mouth.

He’s alive!

“Now, about throwing that sword into that hole behind you. Go ahead and do that or, you know, we kill the boy.”

Makeo’s eyes darted to the trench and back at Dex. If he gave up the Wisp blade, then all would be lost. He searched deep inside of himself and found that there may be just enough Wisp energy to save himself. However, he’d come to find that there were always uncertainties when it came to the Wisp’s potential. How was he going to get out of this mess?

“I see your tiny brain coming up with all sorts of plans and ideas, son of Esh! And I’m telling you, don’t you fucking dare! Do you see this boy? Do you see him right here? I will kill him. I will kill him so dead that you won’t be able to distinguish his face from the ass of a rektops! Are you listening, young prince? I’m going to kill your friend!”

“How?” Makeo managed to say without screaming out in anger.

“How what? Speak up boy! As you can see, I’m missing som—.”

“How did you find him!”

“Oh! Good question.” Dex extended his hand and waved it to a distant hill. He did a few strange gestures with his mangled fingers.

A few seconds later, and a few spots on the hill began to move. Tarps of red coloring were thrown aside revealing a dozen or so men. From this distance, it was hard for Makeo to distinguish them from their surroundings as their armor was different from that of the soldiers. He figured that these had to have been spies for they wore camouflaged armor that made them look like part of the terrain.

“We’ve been watching you, prince,” said Dex, now pointing behind Makeo. He turned and saw that he and the army were surrounded by these spies that were now popping up all over the place. “We knew where you would arrive, when you would arrive, and even how you arrived.”

“But… how?” asked Makeo. “How did you know I was coming?”

Dex chuckled, snapped his fingers, and one of the guards lifted his arms to wipe sweat from underneath his pits. “Radiance. Did your father ever explain to you how it works?”

Makeo shook his head. Father had only given him very brief introductions to the power. It was believed since the kingdom of Auroth was an ally that there would be no need for him to learn how to combat the power. Also, since he himself didn’t have access to the Radiant energy, what would be the point in learning about it other than the very basics? All his life Makeo and his trainers had focused primarily on two things: Reahlic forces and how to combat them.

“I see,” said Dex, grabbing a piece of fruit off a platter beside him. He tried to throw it into his mouth but missed. A guard on the opposite side grabbed another piece of fruit and fed it to him.
